Memphis will celebrate Juneteenth with a variety of events

Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S.

June 19, 1865 was the day General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, notifying Texans that all enslaved people were free, some two years and six months after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

It became a national holiday in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Act.
