Marketing and Communications Specialist

Position Summary:
The Marketing and Communications Specialist reports to the Director of Marketing & Communications and plays a key role in supporting the Downtown Memphis Commission's (DMC) internal and external marketing and communications to promote Downtown Memphis, the DMC, and the Central Business Improvement District (CBID). This position supports the planning and execution of DMC events, promotions, digital marketing strategies, and public relations initiatives set by the Chief Marketing Officer. The ideal candidate will be passionate about Downtown Memphis and committed to building a downtown for everyone.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports the Director of Marketing & Chief Marketing Officer in managing the day-to-day operations of the marketing department and supporting the marketing efforts of the entire DMC team
- Executes and measures social media programs and campaigns in alignment with the DMC's social media strategy, and creates monthly performance reports
- Writes creative and compelling content for the website, social media platforms, press releases, and applications
- Supports the DMC Marketing and Communications plans, growing awareness of Downtown Memphis as a destination for businesses, residents, visitors, and investors
- Executes the creation of all DMC creative assets to ensure consistent and effective branding and communications
- Assists the marketing team with writing press releases and media alerts
- Collaborates with the marketing team in executing marketing, social, and event strategy, including updating and maintaining downtownmemphis.com, bealestreet.com, and all related social platforms
- Represents the DMC at designated events, meetings, and presentations
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Position Requirements and Education:
- Preferred Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts, Advertising, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or similar fields
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in marketing/communications
- Proven experience in social media content creation and management
- Flexibility and willingness to occasionally work irregular hours, nights, and weekends in support of District programs, events, and promotions
Minimum Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
- Self-starter able to efficiently execute initiatives and actively manage deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient in MailChimp, Word/Excel and/or Google Docs, PowerPoint, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and all computer programs required to meet the above duties and responsibilities
- Creative thinker with a passion for developing fresh, out-of-the-box ideas
- Experience with or strong working knowledge of
- Community engagement and surveying
- Digital marketing, social media strategy, and analytics
This position description is a general overview of the responsibilities of the Marketing and Communications Specialist. This is a salaried, exempt, AT-WILL position. Duties and responsibilities are subject to modification occasionally, with or without prior notice. In order to perform the necessary duties and responsibilities of this position, the selected person must possess the skills, aptitude, and abilities to perform all of the listed duties and responsibilities proficiently.
Position salary range is dependent on qualifications and experience. Due to the nature of the work, this is an in-person position. Additionally, the selected candidate is expected to reside within Shelby County, Tennessee.
