Downtown Public Infrastructure Improvement Project

The Downtown Memphis Commission, in partnership with the City of Memphis, is planning public infrastructure improvements within the Beale Street Historic District. These improvements aim to enhance the public realm, foster a safe and welcoming experience, and preserve the cultural and historic significance of Beale Street, while strengthening its position as a premier destination for locals and visitors.

Purpose of the Improvements:

  • Preserve the cultural legacy of one of America’s most iconic entertainment corridors
  • Enhance pedestrian connectivity, streetscapes, safety, and security
  • Create flexible public spaces that support music, festivals, and community events

What the Improvements May Include

  • Implement strategic road diets and traffic flow improvements to better support peak event travel and periods of high visitation
  • Improve sidewalk accessibility in compliance with ADA standards while enhancing streetscape elements such as landscaping and hardscape features
  • Upgrade street and pedestrian lighting to increase visibility and create a safer, more welcoming environment
  • Introduce safety enhancements that support active use of the district during both daytime and nighttime hours
