Downtown Public Safety Infrastructure Improvement Project
The Downtown Memphis Commission, in partnership with the City of Memphis, is planning public infrastructure improvements within the Beale Street Historic District. These improvements aim to enhance safety and foster a welcoming experience for Beale Street, while strengthening its position as a premier destination for locals and visitors.
Purpose: Improving Safety and Public Realm
Enhance safety, security, and connectivity for both pedestrians and vehicles, while simultaneously elevating public infrastructure to foster a vibrant and active district.
What the Improvements May Include
- Implement strategic road diets and traffic flow improvements to better support safety during peak event travel and periods of high visitation
- Improve sidewalk accessibility in compliance with ADA standards while enhancing streetscape elements such as landscaping and hardscape features
- Upgrade street and pedestrian lighting to increase visibility and create a safer, more welcoming environment
- Introduce safety enhancements that support active use of the district during both daytime and nighttime hours
Project Funding & Focus Area
Funding for this project is part of the Downtown Public Safety Grant by the State of Tennessee, awarded to the Downtown Memphis Commission. The Downtown Public Safety Grant Fund was established to increase public safety, reduce blight, enhance economic development infrastructure, and reduce crime in downtown business and commercial areas.
The Downtown Memphis Commission has been awarded $74 million for public safety and infrastructure enhancements within the Beale Street Historic District.
