Details
In 1962, actor Danny Thomas opened St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the first fully integrated hospital in the South dedicated to helping kids survive cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Named after St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes, Thomas founded the hospital after experiencing a tumultuous start to his career in Hollywood before ultimately finding success.
To this day, St. Jude cares for some of the world’s sickest children regardless of their race,
ethnicity, beliefs or ability to pay. Treatments developed at St. Jude have helped raise the survival rate for children with cancer in the United States, where 4 out of 5 children survive cancer.
