Beale Street money could give second ‘first impression’ of Memphis

The $74 million now sitting in a Downtown Memphis Commission account could let Memphis give the world and region a new “first impression,” city officials said this week.

The Downtown Memphis Commission and the City of Memphis applied for and recently received $74 million from the state to improve Beale Street and the area around it. 

The money is expected to be used for things such as upgraded street and pedestrian lighting, security features, landscaping and traffic flow improvements.

Together, those planned infrastructure improvements are intended to make Downtown Memphis safer in reality, perception and give the city’s worn down core a glossier shine.
