Demolition of blighted tower in city core moves forward
The demolition of a longtime blighted tower in the Medical District is progressing forward.
The 969 Madison Ave. property — a 12-story, 400,000-square-foot former Holiday Inn hotel — is now a job site, with plans for the building and related structures to be torn down.
A demolition permit, valued at $750,000, was filed on March 19 with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development for structural demolition of the parking garage to make way for equipment.
In total, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) project to demolish the tower and adjacent buildings is projected to cost $19.37 million. This specific demolition has been in the works since last summer, but UTHSC has planned to replace the building for years.
