National Civil Rights Museum celebrates 35th anniversary, 40th MLK Day
Monday marks the day the United States honors the memory and pays tribute to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
As Memphis prepares to honor Dr. King Jr., the National Civil Rights Museum is marking a major milestone, with a full day of service, reflection, and community events at the museum.
This Monday is the 40th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, and the 35th anniversary of the National Civil Rights Museum.
Museum leaders said the goal is to remind people that MLK Day is more than a day off; it’s a day to serve and reflect on Dr. King’s unfinished legacy and his vision for the community.
“This is a history that we want to remember, so that we won’t be deemed to repeat it in the future. So, to remember these sacrifices, some were empowering, some were triggering, but this is a story. This is an American story, and so for us to reflect and reconcile on that term, I think we’ll be in a much better position,” said National Civil Rights Museum Director of History, Interpretation, and Curatorial Services, Ryan Jones.
