Rhyme and reason: City of Memphis inducts inaugural poet laureate at Downtown’s Cossitt Library

Bria Saulsberry was named the first poet laureate of Memphis during a Tuesday, May 20, induction ceremony, marking a new chapter for the city’s literary arts community.

High school students from the Memphis Jazz Workshop set a sultry tone for the evening, playing late singer D’Angelo’s “How Does It Feel” at the top of the program.

Energy filled Downtown’s Cossitt Library as attendees gathered to honor the three finalists: Aisha Raison, Jasmine Settles and Saulsberry.
