Rising from the ashes: Clayborn Temple resurrection gets $1.5M grant

The effort to rebuild Clayborn Temple is off to a $1.5 million start with a combination grant announced Wednesday, May 28, by the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund along with the Mellon and Ford Foundations.

Brent Leggs, the executive director of the fund, announced the grant one month to the day that the historic church burned and was declared a total loss in a fire that was intentionally set.

The announcement was the centerpiece of a kickoff of rebuilding efforts that drew around 200 people to a tent on a vacant lot next to I Am A Man Plaza and the ruins of the 19th century church that became a civil rights landmark during the 1968 sanitation workers strike.
