Front Street Between Union and Monroe to Close Beginning July 8 for Streetscape Improvements

MEMPHIS, Tenn., July 7, 2026. Beginning Wednesday, July 8, Front Street between Union Avenue and Monroe Avenue will be closed through Dec. 1 as the first phase of the Front Street Improvement Project begins.The project will improve pedestrian safety and accessibility by reducing Front Street from four lanes to three, installing curb bump-outs and ADA-accessible curb ramps, enhancing sidewalks, and adding landscaping.

Additional phased closures are anticipated as follows:

  • Riverside Drive/Monroe Avenue intersection: July 13-Sept. 18
  • Front Street/Monroe Avenue intersection: July 23-Sept. 25
  • Front Street/Union Avenue intersection: Sept. 26-Nov. 4

Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes. The City appreciates the public's patience as these improvements are completed.

What is this project?

How long will construction last?

Work along Front Street is currently expected to take place between July 8th and early November, 2026. 

Will streets be closed during construction? 

Yes. Temporary street closures will be necessary during construction. Work is expected to occur in phases. This means closures will affect specific sections of Front Street and nearby intersections at different times rather than the entire area at once. 

Will pedestrian access remain available? 

The project team intends to maintain pedestrian access whenever possible throughout construction. However, Front Street between Union and Monroe will be closed. 

Some routes may shift or require temporary detours during certain phases. Maintaining safe access to businesses and nearby properties will remain a priority.

Will businesses remain open?

Yes. The goal is to maintain access to businesses throughout construction and minimize disruptions whenever possible. Because work will occur in phases, impacts will vary by location and timing. Additional information will be shared with affected businesses as construction plans are finalized.

Will there be detours?

Yes. Temporary traffic and detours will be required during portions of construction. Detailed detour maps and access information will be shared in advance of each construction phase whenever possible.

What improvements are being made?

Upgrades include improved sidewalks, ADA-accessible crossings, upgraded landscaping, enhanced crosswalks, lighting, and additional on-street parking. These improvements will make it easier and more comfortable for people to move through the area whether they are walking, visiting local businesses, heading to work, or spending time downtown.
